Symptoms of overactive bladder
Along with theย urge to urinate immediately, overactive bladder is characterized by needing to urinate more frequently than every two hours. Symptoms include:
- Numerous trips to the restroom, sometimesย eight or more timesdaily
- Inability to wait to use the restroom
- Needing to get up two or more times during the night to urinate
- Involuntary urination after feeling the sudden need to visit the restroom
Overactive bladder can worsen due to certain caffeinated beverages like coffee and tea, along with spicy foods and alcohol. Patients often intentionally limit their fluid consumption to lessen trips to the bathroom. The condition typically does not involve any burning, pain or blood seen in the urine.
How can Botox help?
Research indicatesย that Botox injections may work as well as medications for controlling symptoms of overactive bladder. In a study of approximately 250 women suffering from the condition, researchers found that a single Botox injection reduced instances of urinary incontinence. Nearly three-quarters of the study participants experienced three urine leaks per day after six months compared to about five per day when the study began. In addition, twice as many women who received Botox injections reported cessation of their symptoms.
