Although itโs been an essential part of the medical toolkit for many years, treating everything fromย muscle spasmsย and excessive sweating to migrainesย andย preventing signs of aging, new Botox benefits are being discovered (and proven)ย all the time. A new study from earlier this year confirmed what many Botox providers in the medical community had already suspected: Botox researchers showed definitive improvement in skin elasticity and pliability, which are perhaps the most important hallmarks of youthful skin.Thisย latest Botox studyย was done at the University of Toronto and published in the July/August 2015 edition of theย JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association). In the studyย Botox was definitively shown to improve skin elasticity and pliability. These two skin properties, elasticity and pliability, are the key characteristics of young skin, helping our skin to appear refreshed, youthful and rejuvenated.
Defining Skinย Bio-mechanicsย and the Effect of Botox
The skinโs prominent bio-mechanical properties are: pliability (or “stretch-ability”) and elasticity (ability to “snap back” into shape), which contribute to skin’s overall strength. These properties are very noticeable and evident in children and young people, who have plump skin that quickly โpopsโ back into shape after smiling, frowning or wearing a tight cap, for example. Pliable, collagen rich, moist and elastic youthful skin does not show any (or shows very minor, temporary) aftereffects from prior movement or pressure indentations of the skin. Therefore, young skin is very plump, resilient and resistant to wrinkles.
The Botox Advantage: Fighting the Effects of Time and Environment
Over time however, with aging, environmental challenges and sun exposure, our skinโs elasticity greatly suffers–and pliability is affected as well. After Botox treatment for mild wrinkles in theย glabella (forehead area between the eyebrows) and other facial sites, the researchers found noticeable improvement in the skinโs ability to โsnap backโ into shape. In essence, Botox helped mildly wrinkled skin behave more like young skin for up to 16 weeks.
The researchers note that ongoing studies will further reveal new long-term planning strategies for maintaining healthy, youthful skin and potentially treating scarring and other skin conditions, in addition to Botox anti-wrinkle treatment.
