For Beautiful Lashes, Take a Look at Latisse

Latisse is the only prescription medication available for treating hypotrichosis, defined medically as โ€œinadequate eyelashes.โ€ To help you decide if eyelash growth products like Latisse might benefit you, hereโ€™s everything you and your lashes need to know.

Why are some people’s lashes so thin?

Thin lashes happen for lots of reasons: normal wear and tear, medical issues like thyroid conditions and even skin cancer. Lashes typically grow in a month or two then go through a resting phase before they eventually fall out.

What does Latisse do, exactly?

We don’t know the exact mechanism, but we do know that Latisse keeps your lashes in their growth stage for longer and stimulates the inactive phase into becoming an active phase of growth. Although Latisse likely does not directly cause new lash growth, some patients who have lost lashes to chemotherapy have responded to the product. It usually takes about three weeks or a month for an average person to get some results, and full results take up to 16 weeks.

How do you apply Latisse?

The product comes with its own applicator that dispenses just the right amount of Latisse. Some people make the mistake of using a different applicator. To apply, you simply close your eyes and run the included applicator across your lashes.

Can your lashes get too long?

Peopleโ€™s lashes occasionally grow dramatically long with Latisse and even require trimming. If this happens, patients are advised to lower the dosage from once a day to several times a week.

Doing Latisse correctly

The manufacturer notes the following doโ€™s and dontโ€™s for using the product: โ€ข DO only use the sterile applicators provided with Latisse to apply the product. โ€ข DONโ€™T apply the product to your lower eyelids. โ€ข DO blot any excess with a tissue. โ€ข DO remove contacts before application. โ€ข DO reinsert contacts 15 minutes after application. โ€ข DONโ€™T let the applicator tip touch your fingers or other surfaces, since it can become contaminated by infection-causing bacteria. โ€ข DO understand that if you stop using the product, lashes will go back to their prior appearance.
